  • Challenge

Youth unemployment is not consistent with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and more boldly, SDG 8.5. The Manual girls project idea addresses two inter-related issues that contribute to on-going youth unemployment in Uganda; 1. Lack of networking opportunity. Employers don’t know about skilled youth and vice-versa. 2. Lack of job skills. Youth are unskilled. The implications are profound: how can employment be achieved when the required skills are unavailable? . There is pressing need to train the youth, and match the skills with employment. Yet, aside from this effort, there is no effort to train youth, and match skills with employment.

  • Solution

Youth unemployment is not consistent with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and more boldly, SDG 8.5. Idea aims to achieve a lasting solution to youth unemployment through job skills training. Approximately 70% of youth in Uganda are unemployed - ACODE Infosheet No. 26.2014. This troubling trend is leading to dramatic increase in social issues like crime. There is pressing need to train the youth, and match the skills with employment. Yet, aside from this effort, there is no effort to train youth, and match skills with employment. The idea addresses two inter-related issues that contribute to on-going youth unemployment in Uganda; 1. Lack of networking opportunity. Employers don’t know about skilled youth and vice-versa. 2. Lack of job skills. Youth are unskilled. The implications are profound: how can employment be achieved when the required skills are unavailable? To solve the issues above, an app will be developed to (1) offer skills training (2) match skills with employment in 3 steps; (1) User creates a profile (2) learn job skills (3) Get hired. For example, one can learn how to bake a cake then use gained skills to serve a local birthday cake request using the same app. Study skills, language, place and time, is up to the user. This idea is unique for two reasons; it will, 1. Enable youth to gain job skills and get matched with employment in one place. 2. Lead to invaluable job creation resource, one of the potentials to lead the economy of Uganda.

  • Long-Term Impact

This project offers young mothers daycare services especially, those sitting final exams which enables them to have more academic focus. Poor children are offered more equal capabilities to reach a better future for them and their future families. When children are forced to select work instead of education, they are deprived of the opportunity to build better lives. Kujifunza Kucheza seeks to break the cycle of poverty, passing from generation to generation, by providing a sustainable and very important enhancement of living conditions.
